Schauspielhaus Zürich

Recently, Casper Hübertz and I were interviewed for Agency Future.

The project was born when Aaron Bateman – English-born copywriter living and working in Copenhagen – won a travel grant to document emerging business ideas and models in the global advertising industry.

We were asked to tell the story about Spoiled Milk, what agency we wanted to create, how we work differently from other agencies – and how we see ourselves evolving.

Have a read here.

Le Cool sends out hundreds of thousands of e-mails. Weekly. No wonder we were thrilled when they asked us to modernise their entire web application in order to accomodate their growing popularity.

Le Cool

CHALLENGE

Le Cool is a weekly magazine featuring a selection of cultural events and leisure activities for the following cities: Barcelona, Budapest, Dublin, Istanbul, Lisboa, London, Madrid and Moscow.

Their ambition is to filter out the best exhibitions, movies, concerts & DJs plus a sought selection of extraordinary bars and restaurants. The magazine is distributed every Thursday around noon via e-mail.

When Spoiled Milk was approached, Le Cool already had an existing functioning application serving hundreds of thousands of users weekly.

The request was to replace this system with a more efficient version scoring high on user friendliness. More specifically, the frontend of the application should be improved and the website should receive a new interactive interface.

SOLUTION

The new underlying system is built from our in-house developed Casein CMS, which as a new feature secures that content is published and updated before a newsletter goes out.

Stability and reliability of the web application have been vastly improved and the system has become much more flexible and scalable for the future of Le Cool. Here, an important decision was to externalise the crucial and sensitive process of sending out hundreds of thousands of emails on a weekly basis to an external service.

The ability to dive into statistics about the newsletter usage has been highly improved. Similarly, the options of placing advertisement beats the previous version with the new connection to SMART AdServer, which does the job of organising, monitoring and customising advertising in the Le Cool application.

LeCool is about to roll out the new application to their different ciities, so for now you can only check out the Dublin version of Le Cool.

The evolution of Spoiled MIlk has throughout the last 4 years gone through many different phases. We were an art collective, we became an ideas agency, we grew techy and all the different steps have helped shape off the itchy edges and provided us with a well-balanced foundation. Now, with the challenges of current and future projects, we were in need of new talents.

Christof and Halya - new team members

Halya Borysyuk made a wonderful path into our Copenhagen office. Before even getting in touch, she did her homework and realised what we needed: To increase focus on the user’s perspective! Born and raised in Ukraine, Halya is studying Cultural Studies at the University of Copenhagen and will be working full time with Spoiled Milk during the autumn months. Her primary task will be to conduct both qualitative and quantitative interviews, analyse data and utilise her findings in dialogue with our clients.

Christof Dorner is joining Spoiled Milk as a full-time employee from today! This young Swiss developer was looking for a place to progress his learning-curve and grow. He also put weight on an environment allowing him to pick up on new technologies and – if possible – to apply these to client projects. And maybe most significantly, Christof was searching for a place, where people would “have fun at work”. The entire Spoiled Milk team is excited to embrace next phases of our evolution with Christof on our side.

The organisation empowering individual artists to produce art unrestricted by external boundaries requested Spoiled Milk to develop an online replication of their philosophy. Nothing less.

Challenge

Sound Development AG is a hub following a family tradition of supporting independent culture by providing facilities and aid in an environment that allows artists to realise projects freed from boundaries of classical culture institutions.

The organization wanted their presence on the web to be a simple, easy-to-use and clearly structured archive where users could access their running projects. Further, the website should function as a documentation platform for projects and seek to interlink these.

The aim was to create a visually simple interface, since Sound Development AG as the “mothership” wished to stay in the background. The attention of the visitors should instead be attracted to the many vibrant projects. At the same time Sound Development AG wanted to transcend the feeling of how Sound Development AG works and acts in order to give users a glance of their highly personal way of realising projects with artists.

Solution

In collaboration with the designer Alain Leclerc von Bonin we came up with the solution of combining two websites in one: The simple XHTML and AJAX driven overlay works as the basic interface of the information-based project archive. In the background there is a fullscreen Flash media player acting as the emotional layer that gives users an insight into Sound Development AG in a more multimedial and personal manner.

The information layer and media player are linked together and every information channel on the website has its corresponding channel that plays the related media modules. The user can either browse the website in a classical way or by zapping through the channels of the media player.

We are truly delighted to announce the addition of Jamie, Anders and Isabel to our Copenhagen office. With their superb skills within tech, strategy and design, this highly anticipated trio are taking Spoiled Milk to the next step.

jamieandersisabel

Jamie Appleseed – Developer

Our new addition to the tech team was born and raised in Hareskovby in the region of Værløse in Denmark. Here he attended primary school in Hareskov Skole and followed a business program at Lyngby Handelsskole, HHx.

Jamie has a long record of entrepreneurial projects starting out when he co-founded a small web development company 3-4 years ago with a friend. The small team developed a handful of websites for realtors, etc. In 2006, Jamie co-founded GMin (a charity organization distributing mosquito nets in Sierra Leone, Africa) with three friends. Today the organisation has grown to an impressive 40+ members. Also, Jamie was the brain and developer behind Burden Butcher.

Among Jamie’s main interests is making the Internet more simple and obvious to use (and develop!), browsing and discovering coffee, tasting wine and diving into the Italian cuisine. For warming up the auditory meatus Jamie prefers putting on records from Jack Johnson’s record label Brushfire Records.

And Jamie’s plans for the future? He wants to live in the States for a year, run a marathon and taste a cup of Kopi Luwak coffee.

Anders Fredsø Olsen –
Strategic Consultant

Our three-months strategic consultant Anders was brought up bonafide small-town with approximately 200 souls near the extravagant metropolis of Grenaa with such cultural gems as The Kattegat Center, a larger tank of sharks and such, The Grenaa Kino, the local movie theater showing Hollywood’s finest and of course The Gyldne Krus, (The Golden Mug) where you could get an honest beer and a good old bar-brawl if you were in the mood. “I rarely was”, Anders admits.

After high school Anders attended the Århus Business Academy, followed by the Århus School of Business and finally went on to become a “chaos pilot” (2006-2009). During his relatively short life-span Anders has taken on a wide variety of jobs, incl. cardboard-boy, vegetable-refiller, strawberry-picker, bottle-collector, home tutor, dishwasher, assistant teacher, B2B Salesman, mens wear seller, sofa seller, bartender, consultant, music manager, business owner and event manager.

His interests include funny words, longs lost proverbs and weird music that irritates you in some way. For the future Anders wants a world where politicians think further than the next election and actually do what they are elected to: Make tough decisions on behalf of the people. He prefers “a world where over-consumption and greed is replaced with a fair distribution of resources and wealth and a world where the most obvious thing is to think about and act sustainably”.

Isabel Seiffert –
Design Intern

Our new Design Intern was born in the DDR and grew up in the Eastern und Southern parts of Germany. In 11th grade Isabel travelled across the Atlantic to experience the (very) United States of America for a year.

Isabel is currently doing the 5th semester of her Visual Communications studies at the Merz Academy in Stuttgart – intended to be of a more practical sort. Previously, she had a fling with the fashion industry – studying Textile Technology. Spoiled Milk happens to be the first station of Isabel’s promising working career.

Of Isabel’s major interests you would maybe have been able to predict taking photos and drawing illustrations. However, it may come as a surprise to you that Spoiled Milk’s first ever female team member (excl. freelancers) also happens to be our first ever motorcycle rider. Yay!

Knowing this, it seems like the perfect combination when Isabel explains her future dreams: “I would like to travel the world and document my impressions with camera and pen”.
