Working in the centre of the city was always going to be a little more hectic than being out in Østerbro. A little more hustle here, a little more bustle there, makes for a more stimulating work environment. Having to evacuate a burning building wasn’t something we’d anticipated though. We’re not entirely sure how it started, but the key cutter’s on the corner is a lot more black than it was before and all rooms in the left of the building were stormed by the fire brigade. Luckily nobody was hurt and our office escaped with just a bad smoky smell.

I, like many other people, are simply in love with Danish wonder collective Efterklang. How can you not be? Anyway, this post isn’t really about Efterklang specifically, so I better change my course quic… Oh, well it is… about Efterklang, but mainly about the wonderful work of Nanna Hvass, the creator of the amazing, entertaining puzzle cards hiding in the Efterklang mini-album “Under Giant Trees”. Those cards… are seriously amazing. I don’t know what to say. So, super, super Kudos to Nanna Hvass (http://www.myspace.com/nan_na) for that tiny stroke of genius. I would have posted this earlier, but I just recently found out that you can see a puzzle card demo on YouTube, so now it’s perfect.

Sometimes our artwork is rejected and we all cry a little and drink malted comfort drinks. Firstly this recent record cover was deemed to not fit in with the style from the artist’s first release and was sent home with its tail between its legs:

As you may have noticed, we’ve had some server problems recently. Around 4pm last Wednesday our external web server decided to suffer from serious memory corruptions and shut down. As this machine not only runs our own website, email and other distributed services, it is also host to many of our clients’ sites. Needless to say, we were anxious to get it quickly fixed, but instead discovered a completely incompetent support team on the other end of the phone.

Hostway (UK) provide 24-hour support, but staff it with lethargic and unwilling people. During the following 2 days and the 14 phone calls we made, the only answer that we were given was that an “engineer would be looking at the problem in the next few hours”. None of the promised return phone calls came, and every single request I made for assistance was met with a jobsworth attitude. On Friday morning after being told by a customer support representative that he didn’t have the authority to restart the server, I asked to speak directly to an engineer who did have authority and was given the response that they don’t have phones.

By this point things were desperate, so we took a day out and rebuilt our entire server systems with the fantastic MediaTemple. We’ve already been working with them for our Data Carton project and their support has always been intelligent, personal and prompt, so it was a simple choice. As for Hostway, the old server is still down and we’re still waiting for that phone call three days later.

I apologise for the tone of this post, I’m sure no one likes reading winging articles about hosting companies, but this blog is also a good way to publicise the failings of Hostway and the ill-fated support ticket number #11279839.

We have some exciting Spoiled Milk related music events to announce today.

Firstly, the line-up for the fantastic Forma Nova Festival has just been announced. The annual, three-day extravaganza of independent music, art and now cinema, is in its fifth year and promises to be the best one yet. It is of course the work of our very own art director, Alf Lenni Erlandsen and we hope to see you all in Fredericia, Denmark on the 12th, 13th and 14th of July 2007. If that wasn’t enough, there’s a pre-fest party at Global in Copenhagen on the 26th of May. For more details and the full festival line-up, please visit here.

Secondly, Russell will be dj-ing at Apparatet, Copenhagen this coming Friday (the 11th of May) and again on Saturday the 2nd of June. This week’s theme is “The chasm of despair and the volcano of pop”, which should provide something for everyone.

Our new studio has a unique vantage point. We witness many interesting daily events from Copenhagen city life, such as the Queen’s mounted Lifeguards performing their regular 11am tour of the perimeter, to the 17-year-old boys marching past with their bayonets as part of the country’s compulsory military service. If we have time, we blow bubbles down onto these passing processions, but this evening during a late night video-editing session, a group of youths protesting against some confused Christians came past and while I filmed, Casper could do nothing to control his dancing instinct. We’re expecting complaints in the morning from the Tanzanians upstairs.

The reason for our jubilant mood is the launch of Velour’s new website this evening. Featuring drag-and-drop stickers, video playback and a jukebox, it’s dripping with the kind of kitsch-pop-aesthetics that earns them 7’s out of 10’s from post-post-post-ironic publications. We hope their German fans enjoy it.
