Secondly, Andreas Zecher is joining us in our Swiss office from next Monday. Andreas has been a friend of Spoiled Milk for a number of years and we are very excited to finally have him as an employee. He will be taking on a technical role working with Flash, Ruby on Rails and iPhone development.

Andreas

Andreas spends his free time using his excellent understanding of game design and theory to produce innovative Flash games. He has studied at The University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam, Germany and has already spent some time in Zürich at the Hochschule für Gestaltung & Kunst. His professional career has seen him previously working with the excellent teams at Fi (Née Fantasy Interactive), Fork Unstable Media and Spex Magazine.

You can check out his personal website here.

Just another recommendation for those types of people who like things made easy for them, especially when they surf the web.

Mozilla Labs (the group behind the infamous Firefox browser) have released a prototype version of their latest brainchild, Ubiquity.

I’ll leave you to watch the introduction and get the plug-in for Firefox, because this is amazing!

Read more and download Mozilla Ubiquity here.

Just wanted to recommend a good service that the guys at 37signals are providing. The two partners Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson do sessions every Tuesday where they sit down in Jason’s kitchen and answer questions from various interested people from around the world. They cut to the bone and give participants an honest opinion on the world of business communication and strategy, but also some cool advice on Ruby on Rails!

37signals are the company behind products like Basecamp, Highrise, Backpack and Campfire which are all products that we use externally and internally.

Visit this site for more information: http://live.37signals.com

I stumbled upon this graphic designer and self-proclaimed fibre artist, Nicole Gastonguay, through one of the design feeds and was immediately intrigued by her knitting skills. I love things that are given an extra dimension by the material and craft put into it.

Unfortunately her shop is closed at the moment, so I’m unable to claim a milk carton, but hopefully she’ll have time to make more soon.

View some more great examples of the above toys.

I recently bought myself a MacBook and have now also started to do all my work on Mac OS X.

It has to be said that I used to be quite the Bill Gates evangelist up until a couple of months ago when I got a new PC laptop with Vista installed. I don’t have much more to say other than it crashed and burned a couple of weeks ago. It might have been a virus, it might have been Vista being tired of my almost reckless use of the OS. Seriously, you can’t find a damn thing on there for all the pop-up warnings. It was clear that it was time for something reliable and where I felt like I was in control, but not too much.

I thought I’d become of age and stop my near neurotic obsession with a computer that I can feel and screw up as much as I want to, and buy myself an Apple computer. There has been a major change in how I work with computers, between when I was 14 years old and now 10 years later – my focus has changed a lot. As a young and inexperienced boy, I used to spend hours upon hours trying to figure out what to do next – I had already cleaned my desktop five times! So I began to go deeper and found out that a PC can take you as far as a black hole. It’s endless (are black holes endless?). And that’s probably a good thing for some people…

But I use a computer at least 14 hours a day now and need to just focus on my work. Here’s a small list of must-haves for that situation:

* I need to be able to rely on my computer. I don’t want an “UNEXPECTED ERROR!!!” or such useless nonsense.

* I need to be able to focus on my work and not on a cluttered visual mess.

* I need to not be distracted by idiotic pop-ups warning me of things that I learnt as a child. Small useful notifications will do, but silently taking the intelligent choice is preferred.

* I need to quickly test across various platforms and browsers, while coding XHTML/CSS.

It’s clear that with the new Intel Macs, I can cross the latter off the list. Running Parallels is a dream. I can even access my netbanking through IE6 (the most reliable way to use Danske Bank’s services) in a small window, while still Exposé-ing and drag’n'dropping.

I think I’ll make another list. Here’s the reasons why Mac just works better than PC (i.e. Vista).

* You feel in control of what’s happening. You’re accepting the “vital” changes, but acknowledge that most processes and settings are hidden, because you won’t actually need to change them. Someone has already figured out that this is the way a person wants to work and want to save you time.

* There’s an application for everything that I had on my PC. I have yet to find a Windows-only program that I need, where I haven’t found a great Mac alternative (well except for a dodgy, broken web browser, but who needs that anyway!)

* No constant re-booting. I haven’t re-booted in two days. The energy saving settings are amazing.

* There are so many small, helpful workflow features such as Exposé and Spaces. I can organize my processes and not worry about them being back to square one the next time there’s an OS update. I use four spaces: 1 = Web/Mail (Firefox, Thunderbird) – 2 = Instant messaging (Campfire, Skype, Adium) – 3 = Development (Photoshop, Textmate, Versions, etc.) – 4 = Entertainment (iTunes).

I like Mac now, but I have no regrets about not switching earlier. I have used older versions of Mac OS before and they’ve never impressed the way that Mac OS X has. This is not an advertisement for Apple – it’s an ode to better usability, natural logic and swallowing your pride to make a change sometime. Less is more.

Not only has the seemingly omnipresent scaffolding been taken down from Gothersgade 21C in Copenhagen (revealing a lovely new paint job on the façade), but we have expanded into some space on the third floor where the motion department now lives.

In case you haven’t noticed, Spoiled Milk is vigorously collecting nationalities among its team members in our aim to cover all 192 U.N. member states (so far China, Denmark, France, Germany, UK). Before we hit the mark, let us introduce you to the sixth nation and Swedish talent Niklas Palm.

As part of his break from Hyper Island, Niklas has chosen to spend the next 7 months developing exceptional projects as an intern in our Copenhagen office.

A preoccupation with photography led the Stockholm-born Swede to study the art of the camera for a couple of years, until the fascination wore out and his eyes landed on the opportunities offered online. His focus on the web quickly moved from the design aspects to the underlying structures dictated by programming.

Luckily, we plan to give Niklas a deep understanding of the Ruby on Rails framework and challenge him on both internal and external projects.

Welcome Niklas at niklas@spoiledmilk.dk!

Some old work has been featured in a new design book, Around Europe: Promotion, which covers self-promotional design from across the European countries. Also amongst the pages is our new friend from Switzerland Dieter Glauser aka. I Did.

The Team

Daniel Jensen has spent his last five years in London, fine-tuning his skills at London College of Communication – especially focusing on moving images. His portfolio counts fashion promotion films, commercial videos and art exploration from the playground. Combining sound and image is his special interest as it delivers a full experience to the viewer. His dream? To use his skills to mix design and film to meet the new demands of interactive media.

Tommy Ipsen’s passion is foremost telling stories within vivid universes through the use of form and colour. Interactive movies and further developing of green-screen and rotoscoping techniques has been of special interest. As a director, Tommy has worked with fictitious documentaries and art films for 10 years and picked up education at the European School of Theater, The Art Academy of Funen and a visit to the Berlinale Talent Campus. His goals in life are to express himself, travel and eat fine food along the way.

We first opened our doors in 2005, quickly establishing ourselves amongst the new wave of progressive design and technology companies, with our often experimental use of different media formats. Since then we have grown stronger and more specialised, resulting in a highly skilled team who is today focused on providing our clients with engaging online solutions.

This morning we launched our new website:

www.spoiledmilk.dk

Please browse around and check out our case studies (many with accompanying screencasts), find out what internal projects we have bubbling in our lab, meet the new members of our team and of course subscribe to the blog ;)

The last six months have been frantic as we expanded the team dramatically and opened a new office in Zürich, Switzerland. So, thank you to every one at Spoiled Milk for their hard work on this project. A special thank you goes to our ex-intern Remy Valton who designed the current header graphic on the front page.

Regards from Copenhagen and Zürich,

Spoiled Milk.
