I gave a presentation at last week’s Zürich Webtuesday on how to brand and customise an iPhone application without stomping all over the experience of using an iPhone. The talk initially focussed on laying down some ground rules on what to consider when converting an idea into visuals and how to use the UIKit components, before going through the code from our CITYGUIDE application and discussing our implementation of UITableViewCell hierarchies and how we achieved some of the features.

The event was really, really nice, thanks to the hard work and planning of Jonas Schnelli and Marc Ammann. The feedback we received afterwards was very encouraging and it was great to hear that a lot of people found it more useful that the recent day-long official Apple iPhone Tech Talk World Tour. Our next plans are to set up a full mobile developers group in Zürich. More news to be posted on this blog.

As promised I’ve made my presentation slides available below, although they are probably only useful to those who attended the event, as most of the content was in the dialogue and discussion. You can also download the full Keynote file complete with fancy transition effects if you’d prefer.

2008 was a very busy year for us. Not only did we grow from 5 to 14 people (including our wonderful interns), but we moved to Nørrebrogade, opened a foreign office in Zürich, launched our new website and discovered how much fun making iPhone applications is.

In order to celebrate all of the above, we are throwing a *p*a*r*t*y* at the spacious new Copenhagen studio on Friday, 9th of January 2009 from 8pm.

If that wasn’t exciting enough – Russell, Frederik and new managing director, David Luisi, will all be in town.

So come and enjoy (some) free beers, (some) free snacks and (lots of) free music.

We can’t wait to see you all again!

Vi ses snart vores danske venner!

We had our annual Danish Julefrokost (Christmas lunch) last Friday, which was also our intern Jacob’s final day with us. It was an emotional rollercoaster, but the meatfest with snaps made the farewell a little easier. Here are a few of pictures from the evening:

We would also like to announce that the Copenhagen office will be closed from today until January 5th, but we will still be checking our emails on mail@spoiledmilk.dk. On behalf of the entire crew – merry Christmas and a happy new year to all clients and friends.

Yesterday, Spoiled Milk hosted an in-house film shoot at their new Nørrebrogade studio in Copenhagen.

The Motion department is working on a project for CA – a major Danish unemployment insurance fund (a-kasse). We therefore transformed one of our offices into a state-of-the-art film studio and filmed three different people discussing their relationship with CA.

Our offices were buzzing and filled with green screens, cameras, lighting, sound equipment, a make up artist and nervous soon-to-be-filmed people… until it all ended with “it’s a wrap”!

While the Copenhagen office is busy enjoying themselves with Christmas parties and cooking up rice puddings, the Zürich folk are arranging fun events for the whole community!

Webtuesday – Developing for Apple’s iPhone

Webtuesday is a great monthly get together of the web development community in Zürich and surrounding areas. This month’s topic is straying slightly into other programming disciplines and will be focused on an introduction to creating native iPhone applications.

The event will be hosted by inclue7 and has been organised by Marc Ammann (Liip) and Jonas Schnelli (include7). I will also be doing a segment titled “How to brand without ruining the iPhone experience”.

Today is the day of our Christmas lunch here at the Copenhagen office. It’s a time for celebrating with pats on backs and a feast to start our final week before Christmas. It is also Jacob Klintrup’s last day with us as his internship ends. Jacob has been a great help with projects and strategic planning for our Motion team and today he will also cook a traditional Christmas lunch for us all.

No Danish Christmas lunch is perfect without ris ála mande (rice pudding with single “prize” almond) and therefore Jacob has customised our drill (which was being used to setup our new office) into a turbocharged cream whipping machine!

The camera

The new Nikon D90 is a 12.9 megapixel digital SLR camera, with movie capture at up to 1280 x 720 (720p) 24 fps. That’s right! a DLSR that’s also a HD video camera. Quite simply it’s stunning :)

Switzerland

For the Swiss launch, Nikon dropped cameraman Robert Bösch and speed climber Ueli Steck onto the Eiger by helicopter, leaving Ueli to climb the north face and Robert to film it using the D90. The quality of the resulting film (and the speef that Ueli ascends to the peak) is remarkable.
